🌾 Empty Plates, Empty Fields — Hunger in Rural India

In India’s far-off villages, behind the lush green postcards and festival songs, lies a harsh reality: millions of rural families go to sleep hungry every night. Despite being the backbone of our agricultural economy, farmers and laborers in these regions often lack the very food they help grow. 🍚

“They grow the food we eat. But they don’t get to eat what they grow.”

📉 Why Are Rural Families Starving?

  • 🌧️ Droughts, floods, and crop failures
  • 💸 Lack of minimum wage or land ownership
  • 🚫 No access to ration cards or government schemes
  • 🏥 Malnutrition, especially among children and mothers

Entire villages survive on salt and rice water. Children drop out of school because they’re too weak to walk. The cycle of poverty is deep-rooted and generational.

📊 Rural Hunger in Numbers

  • 🍽️ 74 million people in India suffer from extreme hunger, most of them in rural areas
  • 🧒 33% of rural children under age 5 are underweight
  • 🥀 Many households report eating just one meal a day — and sometimes none
“You can’t study, work or even pray on an empty stomach. Food is not charity — it’s a basic right.”
