👵 Homeless Elders in India: Abandoned, Forgotten, Starving

India is home to over 138 million elderly people. Yet tens of thousands of them are spending their twilight years not in peace — but on cold footpaths, railway platforms, and temple steps. 😞

They are the parents and grandparents of a forgotten generation — left behind by society, abandoned by families, and invisible to policy makers.

Imagine growing old not with dignity, but with hunger. No medication. No shelter. No warmth.

🚶 Why Are So Many Elders Homeless?

  • 🛑 Abandonment by family after retirement or illness
  • 💔 Widowhood and lack of financial independence
  • 🧓 Displacement due to migration, disasters or land loss
  • 😔 Mental health challenges and social neglect

They’ve lived their whole lives serving others. And now? They beg for food. Sleep on stone. And face abuse, disease, and isolation.

📊 Shocking Facts About India’s Elderly Poor

  • 💸 Over 51% of elderly people live in poverty
  • 🚫 Only 18% have a regular pension or income
  • 🏠 Tens of thousands are homeless or abandoned
  • 🥣 Many survive on just one sparse meal every 2–3 days
“When you were a child, they fed you every day. Now that they are old — will we let them starve?
